This would be increasingly the case with the loss of the revenue-generating bowl games. The Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Fiesta Bowl would be relegated to teams ranked 17-25, and would regularly involve teams with four losses. The only team that really means anything to most people is DX But they cant feud with DX for ever. As the fans pack in to see the latest multi-sport athlete take his turn as an MMA fighter, it is his effort and desire that will mean the most.A victory would be appropriate; however, after already announcing that his entire fight purse will be donated to charity, it is the competition of the sport that obviously means the most to him as well. . He should be better in 2010.Ricky Nolasco :  The 5.06 ERA he posted last year should scare some owners off. That flurry of moves happened in the first few weeks of the season and for the rest of the season the kick return situation was only addressed by the constant switching of Aaron Brown and Derrick Williams.During the final weeks of the season the Lions would sign Brain Witherspoon to take over kick return duties.

Micah has the potential to be a three-downplayer at the next level, a trait the Cowboys sorely need, but only ifhe can stay healthy. ProjectionBecause of his knee injury, Johnson could drop as low as the fifthround. These Stars in paticular just so happen to be Tommy Dreamer,Paul Heyman,Sabu, and Rob Van Dam.Dreamer has been said to be pretty much a lock on joining TNA in a few months or so. Prior to that incident in which a weight bar crushed his neck and larynx, Johnson had been a successful and productive portion of the running back rotation USC used under head coach Pete Carroll the last few season. Fullmer: http:// In 07, he led the Patriots to a perfect 16-0 season while breaking the record for most passing TD’s in a single season with 50.

Just ask Terrell Owens; he will be looking for his fifth home. The only thing?only thing?that they’re still playing for this season is six more wins, so they don’t tie or break the 1972-73 Sixers’ record for worst single-season record in NBA history Brook’s and Devin’s faces say it all.No. His two bad interceptions in the second half set the Cowboys up for the win. 5 at 3:30 p.m., ESPN) – Tirico hosts this special with all of ESPN’s NFL analysts in Miami who have won Super Bowl rings – Bruschi, Dilfer, Ditka, Gruden, Johnson, Matt Millen, Mark Schlereth and Young.
They have the talent, The Motor City Machine Guns, The British Invasion, Wolfe, Daniels, Hernandez, Amazing Red, Lethal and my personal favorite Beer Money Use them. On March 21, 1998 Rocchigiani won the fight and the WBC title. However, he and his offense were very inconsistent all season after a teaser 5-0 start, and the failure to make the playoffs after standing at 7-5 was too embarrassing for him to overcome to make this list.Joe Flacco:Flacco was solid, but like Manning and Palmer, was pretty inconsistent. John Clayton of ESPN is reporting that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired Alex Van Pelt to serve as the Buccaneers’ quarterbacks coach.

To be sure, some players do redeem themselves, becoming fantasy zombies and arising from the dead to become useful pieces of the roster puzzle we all struggle with every season. My current list looks like this:Ben Sheets, SP, OAKVernon Wells, OF, TORAlex Rios, OF, CHWRickie Weeks, 2B, MILTodd Helton, 1B, COLGarrett Atkins, 1B/3B, BALRussell Martin, C, LADMark Ellis, 2B, OAKFrancisco Liriano, SP, MINAlex Gordon, 3B, KCJ.J. That match against Stanislav Wawrinka in the fourth round at Wimbledon last year had a Henman like atmosphere. Brady only out-gained Brees by a mere 10 yards. The ancient Brett Favre may throw some interceptions, but the guy can still produce some yards. Gabriel made his first three baskets, leading to six early points.

Will he maintain composure or suffer from buck fever? Will his trigger finger become too unsteady as he sees the prey in his sight? He realizes if he misses the target, he may be too late and pay the ultimate price for error. For Jones, this fight is his legacy. Leann Warren, Kathy Hayes, and Claudette Groenendaal, to name a few, have all inspired Hayward’s savvy crowds.Apart from the distance races, other Oregon athletes such as Otis Davis (400m), Mel Renfro (440 yd relay), Jerry Tarr (120 yd hurdles), Harry Jerome (100m), and Mac Wilkins (discus) have left their mark, not only in the confines of Hayward, but on the world stage as well.Hayward Field was named in honor of Bill Hayward, whose coaching career spanned four decades, from 1904 to 1947. Simply put, Derek Fisher has had a great career, won more than his fair share of rings, and has been a philanthropist in the community, but his days in the league as a sharpshooter are numbered. This leaves the Knicks with the option of signing LeBron and another max player like Bosh or Wade. Eric Berry looks like the second coming of Ed Reed, winning the Tatum Award the past two years as the nation’s top defensive back. I have seen some great matches there and look forward to seeing some more in the future.I am all for entertaining the masses, but at some point, the WWE and TNA should live up to their names : World WRESTLING Entertainment! Total NONSTOP Action! Both companies do alot of talking and when they do wrestle, sometimes the matches leave you disappointed. That would prove that they colluded to hide the problem, which almost certainly they did. Why would they ever risk losing the fans all over again by admitting they ran their own version of professional wrestling for over a decade? No, I hardly expect these rich businessmen to come clean, especially when they can continue to make scapegoats of guys like McGwire, Canseco, Sosa, and Bonds? That’s way too easy and they’re still way too greedy. .

But just as the players have the MLBPA on their backs, so the club management has the MLB brass breathing down their necks, trying to make sure that prices don’t skyrocket. You might be thinking, look at Zito: he’ll be making $18 million a year to be a third or fourth starter. He’s willing to come up and support the run but doesn’t have the technique to consistently make tackles though the hits he does deliver tend to be big. Auburn coaches continued to call just to see how things were going and they would always ask him how his games went and how he did They seemed to really care and Sanders took notice. There comes a point in life, when athletes must call it quits. And Warner, 38, constantly worried about jeopardizing his health and faith, ready to share the rest of his healthy life with his seven children and wife, Brenda, who has been very supportive of him during a brilliant career. They played to the level of their competition, but down the stretch, they played with poise rather than struggling in the closingminutes as they did against South Carolina.Much credit needs to be given to the Bulldogs as they came out and executed exactly as they had to in order to beat the Wildcats.

It is completely natural, on the other hand, and fits within our human dispositions, to celebrate when we have achieved something positive. For instance, a stockbroker closes a big sale on the telephone. If nothing else, Tebow would bring a nice addition to the Wild Horses that McDaniels employed last year. With injury-prone veterans Chipper Jones and Troy Glaus manning the corners, there?s a legitimate chance that Prado could be shifted as the season progresses.Omar Infante is currently next on the depth chart, but he?s proven in the past that his bat can?t handle an everyday role. Roddick had also lost to Murray in the Semi Finals of San Jose in 2006 and at the 3rd round of Wimbledon that year. If you guys like what you see, let me know and I?ll see if I can find some other obscure nonsense to talk about.. Despite their recent loss to the Cavaliers, I still think that the Lakers have the strongest team in the league.

Macau is opening 1.20 5.30 12.00 with home team give 1 3/4 with 1.05 water fee level. As much as it pains me to say it being from Boston, the guy is a legitimately a really good guy, or as good as a guy that you have never met can seem.He deserves to be the center of the conversation for top five all time in the NFL. The Phoenix Suns have done very well with their draft picks over the past decade. Steve Young didn’t put together a full season of success until 1992. My guess is, that search that the police did was notauthorized, thus, Jeff gets away clean. The Cavs were rumored to be heavily pursuing Amare Stoudemire. Model or not, when Beyonce loses her clothes I start to lose my mind You could say I’m crazy in love..

13 WashingtonYou could say the same for Washington as is said for Cal. For it’s hard to find a Super Bowl coach who has had a lower profile than his.Under the radar?Caldwell is like a stealth bomber; he doesn’t make a blip on the radar. Other guys who I see to be in the mix are Kevin Martin, Jason Thompson, Spencer Hawes, Donte Greene, Francisco Garcia, Beno Udrih, Jon Brockman, and three guys from the draft and/or free agency.I expect Petrie to take a defensive big man with our first round draft pick this year since Thompson is constantly getting into foul trouble and Hawes is not the greatestdefensive player.A couple of big men whom I see the Kings eyeing this coming draft include Derrick Favors, DeMarcus Cousins, Greg Monroe, Larry Sanders, and Cole Aldrich.Out of all of these guys, I do not see a top 5-10 in the league star down the line in any of them, like I did in Tyreke Evans.I like Sanders and Aldrich for their defensive skills and the other three for their offensive skills. Look out for this guy next season, and remember the name Curtis White He’ll be big.3 Lache Seastrunk, RB (Temple, Texas)Memorize the name. Despite four straight Super Bowl losses, including the aforementioned ?wide right? game, the Bills faithful remained true. In today’s world professional athletes make Hugh sums of money. There used to be a joke inside the NASCAR garage when it came to Dale Earnhardt and restrictor plate racing: Once Earnhardt was entered in the race, everyone wanted to know who was going to finish second. The Man in Black was a restrictor plate ace and told people that he could ?see? the air as it traveled over cars.

I just think it’s time and I’m really excited that we’re considering it.”. Matt Kemp Imagine how better Matt Kemp’s ranking would have been had Manny not loused things up and missed a chunk of the 2009 season. The one key to watch will be his transition from playing linebacker, where he played in high school, to defensive end as his size will prevent him from still playing LB. I think they’re negative things.”The hunger and spirit of Randy Couture is undoubtedly second to none.

6 pick out of Ohio State in 2008, was expected to help the Jets’ pass rush but has no sacks in two seasons and there were also thoughts that Gholston lacks the desire to play at this level. When he does its simple, he scores!Does Chris Drury have a shot that he can score from the point? Does he have a hard enough, accurate shot to even be effective along the boards or at the point NO he doesn’t. Â However, finding the right league or team can be a difficult task. The Ohio Youth Flag Football Association is a recreational league for boys and girls that is affiliated with the NFL. Some people feel offended by that and I’m telling those people to relax it’s just a gimmick, neither CM Punk nor Vince Mcmahon want any Christian to be offended by this straight edge society angle.Stopping Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker Part II Now I wrote an article on how to stop The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels before it happens. Getting Hamilton and Prince give them a pair of vets who can help bring along the young nucleus of Evans and Thompson.

Boozer won’t put the Pacers in the finals and most likely wouldn’t want to resign with them, but his value come in financial freedom.Advantage:Utah Jazz. yet.The Jets defense has the potential to reach that level, the level of defensive immortality. An explosive pass rusher added to the already-explosive combo of Bart Scott, David Harris, and Calvin Pace would move the Jets one step closer to being a very special defense. The only problem is that the CBA essentially garners theacquisition of a big-name/big-money player like Julius Peppers impossible.Kerry Rhodes is the second hole in the league’s top-ranked defense. This is about good, old fashioned American greed. The thing that many fail to realize is that the money from the bowls, even the BCS bowls, is becoming less and less significant as time goes on. boys” affair.Finland skated to a 5-1 win over Belarus on Wednesday afternoon, outshooting them 45-12 in the process. RecapOlli Jokinen opened the scoring in the first period with a power-play goal assisted by Teemu Selanne. The assist marked Selanne’s 36th point in Olympic competition, tying him for first all-time in scoring with former Czech player and IIHF Hall of Famer Vlastimil Bubnik.Niklas Hagman’s power-play goal at 2:10 in the first period gave Finland a two-goal advantage.Twenty-one seconds into the second period, Montreal Canadian forward Sergei Kostitsyn put Belarus on the board after converting on an ill-advised pass by Finnish defenseman Lasse Kukkonen, beating goalie Miikka Kiprsuoff on the far side.At 16:52 in the second, Hagman made several nice moves around defenders before beating Belarusian goalie Vitali Koval with a back-hand shot that gave Finland a 3-1 going into the second intermission.History repeated itself in the third as Finland’s Valtteri Filppula scored 23 seconds into the period.Jarkko Ruutu scored his first ever Olympic goal at 12:59 deflecting a wrist shot from Finnish defender Kukkonen, capping the scoring for the game. AnalysisDespite being dominated for virtually the entire contest, Belarus executed a solid penalty kill, denying four of six attempts by Finland. No. Anything to gain an edge and give his team hope to build on, and most of the time it worked. However, despite the bold personnel moves and play calling the year before it never really transferred into the 2009 season. He had a 53-yard touchdown pass play against Kentucky and made the game-winning touchdown in a victory over Georgia. That particular team-mate, John-Arne Riise, is one of the quieter modern footballers, a shy, softly spoken guy who stays out of the limelight.

All eyes become fixated upon the three bodies that emerge from the darkness, some being rubbed and squinted out of disbelief.Whispers turn into shouts, and both players and the media clamor for a closer look. All activities come to an abrupt halt, and the crowd encloses around the three men. The Bulls are finally playing some good basketball but have a major void they haven’t filled since losing Gordon They are looking to move Tyrus Thomas and Kirk Hinrich The Kings like both of those players. Getzlaf is a question mark right now, sustaining a high ankle sprain recently. They were able to keep Favre off balance, forcing him to throw two interceptions and lose one fumble. The ‘Aints no more, the Saints have just one more game ahead of them, the Super Bowl matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. It?s just something about men skating around on ice using their sticks to hit pucks in a goal.It just makes me fill all warm and fuzzy inside. Sam Bradford’s first two seasons at Oklahoma are well documented.

At DREAM 11 in October of 2009, Fernandes defeated Joe Warren and Hiroyuki Takaya to win the prestigious tournament and in the process the DREAM Featherweight Championship.Joachim Hansen has fought most of his career at in the lightweight division where he holds victories over Takanori Gomi, GZ Calvancante, Caol Uno, Yves Edwards, and Shinya Aoki. Mays reminds me of a slightly less-skilled Troy Polamalu, with excellent speed and hard hitting. This is my first article andI’m looking forward to peoples comments or advice.. Team USA is coming off a disappointing showing at the 2006 games where they finished in eighth place.

These men not only did great things on Sunday, but made a difference in our city every other day, as well.Lamar Hunt gave to the Kansas City community as much as anyone and far more than most He brought us professional football and soccer. He’ll now have the difficult task of trying to duplicate the success he’s had with Flacco with JaMarcus Russell, the Raiders’ No. Who are the forwards on the Jazz? Who are the guards? If you had to pick Williams or Carlos Boozer, whom would you choose? Williams is the heart and soul, and MVP, of his team. Arsenal?s pint sized diddy men.Clearly the revised script titled ?How to be a lazy observer? was in full use.The match ticked on at 1-1 with Denilson?s equalizer being referred to constantly as a deflected shot.I actually got pissed off the more this was said.Frank Lampard for example, has perfected the craft of scoring deflected goals yet no one bothers to mention that they?re deflected.I expected that at some point, Wenger would relieve Theo Walcott off his misery.Theo couldn?t even fart on the pitch without being surrounded by a gang of red and white Stoke shirts. For all intents and purposes, it was like Arsenal were playing with 10 men. When Wenger decided to unleash all three substitutes at the same time, I said to Dean ? ?this is going to be dodgy.?The only time I remember Wenger ever employing a triple substitution was in early September 2006.I was actually sat at a bar in a mall in down town Kampala with Dean and some friends.Middlesbrough were 1-nil up and Wenger brought on Thierry Henry, Alex Hleb,, and Julio Baptista at the same time.We still ended up drawing 1-1 despite the reinforcements.Maybe it was déjà vu, but triple substitutions give me the jitters. At one point, Sly nearly ruled himself out of the game and I was convinced Arsenal were going to complete the game with 10 men.Stoke, however, applied themselves well and scored twice from attacks launched after Arsenal sloppily conceded the ball.I guess that?s what you get with a team determined to cause an upset and a heckling Britannia stadium behind them. The team selection was always going to be a slippery banana skin for Wenger.Damned if he played his strongest team, damned if he didn?t.I was actually pleased that Gallas and Vermaelen had their feet up with a cup of cocoa watching the game from home. The two needed a rest and this game was as good a chance as any to give them a rest.Doom and gloom merchants as well as media hawks and I-Zombies (the new name for plonkers and pundits, aka plundits) will be quick to point out that Arsenal have killed their chances of silverware this season.Frankly speaking?that?s total nonsense.Arsenal had to make a choice and prioritize and in the grand scheme of things, the FA cup was the sacrifice.Of course Arsenal want to win, but prioritizing the Champions League and the Premier league has to be the case. The blunt truth is that the FA cup doesn?t bring in big bucks. It?s still very disappointing to lose a game and I?m sure that the team that played were bitterly disappointed.Time will tell whether the loss adversely affects the morale of the team a la the drama following the fifth round defeat in 2008.Stoke were worthy winners on the day and they gave the game a really good cup atmosphere.I must say, their crowd are brilliant and get well behind their team.It was also very nice to see J Emmanuel Thomas have his full debut for the first team.I like the lad and he has a lot to offer this team.I seriously hope he gets more game time. And as for the nonsense about Stoke being our new bogey team, there?s a simple answer to that according to Wenger.Arsenal doesn?t struggle against Stoke at the Britannia, Arsenal struggles against any team if they don?t play well, period.A positive response is needed at Villa Park on Wednesday night when the first team returns for duty.If you like Stone Cold Arsenal, please help tell the world about it: Digg del.icio.us Facebook email StumbleUpon Technorati Twitter This article is also featured on Stone Cold Arsenal. However, the Jaguars will make another stretch with defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul Pierre-Paul is as raw of a football player as they come.

This is very concerning because it is a indication that perhaps he has been released from TNA. It was perhaps his match against Davydenko which ignited a confident flame under Federer’s continued success in the event.Brushing aside Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray in the semifinals and finals, respectively, Federer was without a doubt the best player in January.Recording his eighth straight finals appearance at a Major while keeping his worldly streak of reaching 23-straight Grand Slam semifinals alive, Federer made a strong case going forward that he may very well finish No. 6. She didn?t last long though, which is disappointing. The way she eliminated Khali wasn?t the way I?d have chosen it either. True, she used her being a woman to her advantage, but I?d rather it be a show of her power and physical prowess.I also would?ve liked to see her in there longer. But, from what I read at the WWE website, there?s hope that this won?t be her last appearance at a Rumble. Beth even talked about how she was much better than Chyna at her prime. Most pointed out how the jerseys were lighter and felt more comfortable. Only Five Games left? Spartans have allowed other Big Ten teams to have a shot at the championship rather than wrap it up themselves? there is still a whole bunch of basketball to be played? And ther outcome is anyones guess…Before I get started: The Spartans are #1 in the Big Ten, SPartyMSU has them at #2 in teh Big Ten.. On defense, the matriculation is just the same?seven losses to graduation.

“I don’t know if it’s going to come up this year, but what we know is this: The Vikings are a valued asset for Minnesota, we want to keep them here, and they’re not going to stay in the Metrodome,” Pawlenty said. Yahoo writer Adrian Wojnarowski and his cohorts had been feeding us trade rumors all week long and NBA fans have been attached to their computers. If Finland is able to set up the game to their liking, a defensive minded game, they could be able to repeat their 2006 run to the medal stand. The Russian and Canadian teams are juggernauts this year in Vancouver, but even the big teams can be beaten, and this Finnish club just might be the David to their Goliath. That said, let’s take a look at the best of these recreations in chronological order, starting from the earliest moment up until last Sunday’s big game.. As most of you know by now, the Yankees moved into a brand new stadium last season. For the Chargers, he is expendable and a headache. The Jets have a logjam in the backfield and Thomas Jones is the odd one out. All three quarterbacks are in the final year of their respective contracts and I have to agree with many that at least one of them is probably going to go.Forgive me if I don’t totally believe Andy Reid, Joe Banner, and the rest of the Eagles organization when they say that Donovan McNabb will be the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010.

Unfortunately, Rice also did not understand the fundamentals to hitting, and very much became the mouthpiece for all that was wrong with the Red Sox in the ’90s.Pages 177 and 178 highlight Scott Hatteberg, former C/1B for the Boston Red Sox, struggles within the organization. This is evident in the amount of times they have conceded leads. Diaby is decent in the central midfield but I don’t like the idea of playing Denilson as the holding midfielder, he naturally is not a player who holds up play and hadn’t it been good for Arsenal to get Patrick Veira back to the Emirates, that would have given them experience and also a captain, a leader that Arsenal really needs. Good Luck!2009 NFL defensive player of the year Charles Woodson (pictured) leads what could be argued as the greatest fantasy secondary ever to be assembled from one school Charles Woodson (6’1, 202) had a brillant 2009 season.

Burke also suggested in the tweet, that this, ?could be the first ever Twitter deal.?  The next day the two were chatting on the phone during the Daytona 500 pothole debacle. But, it?s still Detroit. There are other possibilities, of course, Washington, Seattle, Houston, even Chicago maybe, but seriously, you might just be better off taking a nice pay raise and napping on the sidelines in Minnesota than playing in most of these places.. Successful dynasty owners are those who know when to recycle their stud players for younger talent. Just like Moore, Hedrick is the son of a high school football coach and appears to have the same unparalleled football intelligence. It?s set to have lightweight structures, day-lighting, natural ventilation, and other environmental aspects.. Even though this Pro-Bowl was transferred to Miami and the seats were sold out, some things still need to be changed.1) Fan voting: Matt Schaub, who led theleague in passing yards (4770), completions (396), yards per game (298) and passing attempts (583), wouldn’t have made the Pro Bowl if Tom Brady hadn’t been injured. Finding some versatile, or even situational, LBs would really help upgrade this unit. 6 Say Goodbye to Bob SandersI love Bob Sanders I really do I love his energy on the field I love his quiet leadership ability.

Kurt Angle took TNA by the horns and has made TNA legitimate as he steal’s main events with guys like Styles, Samoa Joe, and even Matt Morgan. Has the championship window finally closed in San Antonio? 14. Just Missed The CutChristian (2005) William Regal KaneSteven Richards-Right To Censor(RTC)Stone Cold(2001)Ric Flair (Evolution)The Rock (2003)Heels On The Rise- The Miz – Drew McIntyre- CM Punk- Batista- Zack Ryder. McNabb rallied Philadelphia with three straight touchdowns but Brees clapped his hands and told the guys, “We’re all right We’ll be fine.”Ah Brees. Iverson complained about his role with the team and claimed he would rather retire than come off the bench for any team Iverson and the Pistons parted ways before the playoffs.

ghosts answer: the guns roar Abruptly; and an aircraft waging war Inhumanly from nearly five miles height. Meets our bouquet of death – and turns sharp right. This sonnet and a handful of others became for a time favourite anthology material; but, until the publication of Currey’s Collected Poems (2001), he was in danger of being forgotten.Ralph Nixon Currey was born in Mafeking, South Africa, in 1907, son of an English Methodist minister who had come out as a chaplain with the British troops at the end of the Boer War. His mother’s grandparents had arrived in Natal as early as 1849. He went to local schools, and then in 1921 was shipped off to England, where for the next six years he attended Kingswood School, Bath, which John Wesley had founded in the mid-18th century for the sons of his itinerant clergy. Meanwhile, his parents had moved to Jamaica, which he visited twice during their 11 years on the island. He read History at Wadham College, Oxford, took a Diploma in Education there, and spent the next few years teaching on short-term contracts at different schools. But his appointment in 1934 to teach History and English at Colchester Royal Grammar School was crucial: except for his wartime army service, he spent the rest of his working life teaching there, until his retirement in 1973.Currey was called up in 1941, at first into the Royal Corps of Signals, then transferring to the Royal Artillery, in which he was commissioned. He served in heavy artillery and radar in Britain, until in 1943 he went by sea to India (visiting South Africa on the way for the first time since his childhood), eventually serving with his gunners on the Burma frontier. He was stimulated by India (“I found there, still going on, the Middle Ages I had read about when studying history at Oxford”), and some of his best earlier poems were written there.

Being transferred as a Major to the Education Corps, he worked on army publications and in 1945, with the blessing of the then Viscount Wavell, co-edited the anthology Poems from India. His first book of poems, Tiresias, had been published in 1940, but it was This Other Planet (1945) which attracted more attention, including Eliot’s. Thereafter, he was encouraged to try his hand at radio verse drama, and had several plays broadcast on the Third Programme and the Home Service. He published a book of elegant translations of French Renaissance poems, Formal Spring, in 1950, and was commissioned by the British Council to write a pamphlet, Poets of the 1939-1945 War (1960, revised edition 1967).Though Currey remained in England, he had some influential South African admirers, beginning with Roy Campbell and continuing with Guy Butler and Jack Cope; in 1959 he was awarded the South African Poetry Prize, and in 1960 went on a lecture tour round South African universities. One of his radio plays, Return to Vaaldorp, drew on part of this experience. He had in 1932 married Stella Martin, herself a writer and the daughter of J.P Martin, author of the children’s classic Uncle They had two sons. In 1982, to celebrate their golden wedding, Ralph and Stella paid another visit to South Africa.

Indeed, much of Currey’s energy in later years went into researching the lives of his South African ancestors. In 1968 he produced Letters and Other Writings of a Natal Sheriff, Thomas Phipson 1815-76, and in 1989 Vinnicombe’s trek: son of Natal, stepson of Transvaal 1854-1932.There was something brisk, no-nonsense, even military, about Ralph Currey’s appearance and stance. For a number of years, in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, he was President of the Suffolk Poetry Society, genial host to many visiting poets. The publication earlier this year of the Collected Poems, edited and produced by his son, the publisher James Currey, in collaboration with David Philip (in Cape Town), came just in time to please this quiet but memorable poet.Anthony Thwaite. Thomas Brasch, writer: born Westow, Yorkshire 19 February 1945; died Berlin 4 November 2001. Although of bourgeois background, his father, Horst, worked as a toolmaker and chaired the local works council.

A member of the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU), he was popular in British Communist and trade-union circles. In 1947 Brasch senior decided to return to the Soviet Zone of Germany, proclaimed in 1949 the German Democratic Republic (GDR). There he successfully negotiated the twists and turns of political life, serving as a member of the Central Committee of the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED), from 1963 to 1989. He was also known to British visitors to the GDR in his capacity as Vice-President of the League for Friendship Among Peoples.Perhaps to allay any suspicion of having picked up British trade-union ideas, Horst sent Thomas to a strict military cadet school. He gained his university matriculation certificate in 1963 and worked in the metal industry before taking up media studies at Leipzig University in 1964. The following year he was sent down for his alleged slandering of leading GDR personalities.

It’s a classic, it’s wonderful and why would you do that?”Though there have been offers to put him on screen – “Rod Stewart and I as feuding rock stars. I don’t think so” – the rock opera Tommy remains his only foray into film acting.”The only thing I was ever offered that was any good was the lead in Harold and Maude,” he says casually. As I’m busily gathering my jaw up from somewhere around my knees, he continues: “Hal Ashby had seen me perform live and he offered me the role. It was a genius script, but I was too busy trying to cement in my career. I’ve always regretted it, even though Bud Cort was brilliant – and we’re good friends.

He wanted me to do the music, but I couldn’t, though I did suggest Cat Stevens.” He doesn’t think he has the temperament for acting: “It’s bad enough doing videos – all that waiting around. You have to have the patience of Job.”And patience is something we all know Elton struggles with. His volcanic bursts of petty-minded fury were what made the documentary Tantrums and Tiaras so completely delicious, and what renders the couple of warm references he makes to that film a surprise. But then, Tantrums and Tiaras was made by the man in his life. And David Furnish is the real reason why Rocket Pictures exists; it’s all for love. “Disney’s offer appealed to my vanity,” Elton admits with equanimity. “But I knew it was a real opportunity for David to work in film, which is something he really wanted to do.”Elton is, he says, very happy Happy at work, happy at home.

His wants are simple: “I would like David to have a really successful movie, for him. I would like success for him.”Then he jumps up and insists that I come to the kitchen and meet David. We hover slightly awkwardly for a moment, and the next thing I know, Elton John is hugging me warmly, planting a big kiss on each cheek, and I feel like I’m saying goodbye to an old friend. And whatever I might have expected, it certainly wasn’t that.. It is a fine line, as any manager knows, the difference between successfully motivating people and depressing them so much that they are unable to function properly. Making a public statement calculated to galvanise your players may backfire horribly: sink them and boost the other side.

Sky is set to fall in on ITV Digital, warns TV chiefLeading article: ITV has been turned into a licence to lose moneyThe story so far*ITV began broadcasting on 22 September, 1955; it was funded entirely by advertising revenue.*ITV consists of several companies, each serving a different part of the United Kingdom, and producing programming shown either locally or nationally across the network Franchises are reviewed every two years. News is provided by ITN (which is part-owned by two ITV companies).*Granada Television is the longest-surviving of the ITV companies it got its first franchise in 1956 and is probably best-known for producing Coronation Street. Yesterday Granada declared losses of nearly £200m, and predicted that it might have to shed more than 1,000 jobs.*The ITV companies’ advertising revenues have slumped dramatically in the past year, notably since 11 September. Granada’s are down 12 per cent year on year.*ITV now has a second channel, ITV2, launched in December 1998, which is available to cable subscribers and digital viewers.*Two ITV companies, Carlton and Granada, jointly own ITV Digital This has so far cost them £800m. That, at least, was one, kindly gloss being put on his statement that almost conceded defeat to a resurgent BBC 1 in the ratings war. Another view, commonly held in ITV canteens, was that, not for the first time, Liddiment had made an almighty cock-up. Instead of being raised, heads were down, wondering how ITV was going to revitalise itself and, more than a few of them questioning why they have to put up with such a hopeless, but highly paid, boss class. In sporting terms, it was the same as Sir Alex Ferguson saying Manchester United will struggle to beat Liverpool because the Merseysiders are playing too well Unbelievable.

He then returned to the Air Ministry before taking command in 1942 of RNAS Fearn. Because of his vast experience he was called in February 1944 to be part of the Staff Combined Operations HQ, where he remained until the end of the war.In 1946 he took command of Ajax for two years. He was to see out his remarkable time in the Navy at the Admiralty, where he was Deputy Director of Naval Equipment. He was placed on retired list in 1951 and became ADC for six months to King George VI.In retirement he was active in the community and spent his last years most happily in Painswick, Gloucestershire, with his wife Ruth, with whom he spent 74 very happy years. In 1990 he recorded his full and active career in A Naval Life.Max Arthur. Break out the ochs and the ayes, the mists, the glens, the isles and the characterful characters, take in Compton Mackenzie; we are with lairds and land again. Scotland’s new Land Reform Bill, published yesterday, would grant rural communities the right to buy land put up for sale, crofting communities the right to buy at any time.

There is talk of the crofters of the Western Isles lighting a beacon for others to follow, and much muttering over the opportunities that will be afforded by some of the Bill’s requirements. The community minimum size proviso, for example, is expected to lead to the discovery of any number of relations who have always kept themselves to themselves. The right to buy fishing rivers looks particularly fruitful, and good for at least three episodes of Monarch Of The Glen.Quite why the most feudal land system in Western Europe, with its grim history and the majority of land still in the fief of often absentee landlords, should always excite such whimsical treatment is not entirely clear; perhaps it makes it more palatable Enough Och aye.. Way back in the 1950s, it was famously remarked by Lord Thompson of Fleet that his ownership and monopoly of the ITV franchise in Scotland was a “licence to print money”. Now independent television looks more like a licence to lose money. Recently, almost everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.

The slump in advertising revenues and the huge investment in digital television have severely tested the companies. Ominously, Granada says it does not know when the advertising recession will end. In a world that is undergoing a digital revolution, ironically aided by ITV’s cheap set-top boxes, and where the multiplicity of channels has pushed competition to an unprecedented pitch, the prospects for the third channel are bleak indeed. The chances of ITV surviving might now be better if successive governments had had the foresight to allow the various regional companies to consolidate into one force. Even now, the industry is still too fragmented, and while Carlton, Granada and the Scottish Media Group may be big fish in the small UK pool, they are small fry indeed internationally.

Sue MacGregor has put an end to months of speculation and named the day. The Today programme presenter, one of the best-loved voices on radio, will cease to be an early morning fixture from next February. “For a presenter, it’s just about the best programme on BBC radio, and it’s been a great privilege to have been there for so long. I shall miss it hugely,” she said. The Radio 4 controller, Helen Boaden, confirmed that Ms MacGregor’s role will be shared between Edward Stourton, Allan Little and Sarah Montague. Another presenter who has been touted as the next Sue McGregor is Winifred Robinson, but she has told the BBC that she does not want to work an early morning shift because she has a young child.Ms MacGregor’s warmth and humanity have endeared her to the Today audience, but may have counted against her when it came to the adversarial political interviews for which Today is famed and which tend to be shared by John Humphrys and Jim Naughtie. Ms MacGregor said in The Independent’s media section recently: “If there is a major political interview on the programme, it will not go to me.

It will go to John or Jim.”She has said that her job as an interviewer is “to go for elucidation rather than to make a clever political point … to pin them down on behalf of people out there who are not journalists”. The popularity that she has commanded because of this approachis one of the factors that has made it hard for the BBC to fill her shoes.Jenny Abramsky, the director of BBC Radio, paid tribute to Ms MacGregor, saying she had been a “towering figure on the radio landscape”.Ms MacGregor’s first radio role after she has left Today will be as a castaway on Desert Island Discs.. ITV Digital’s survival battle looked increasingly desperate last night after one of its joint owners admitted that the cost of trying to keep up with Rupert Murdoch’s BSkyB was “unacceptably high”. At present, ITV Digital represents the main competitor to Sky.Stuart Prebble, chief executive of ITV Digital, will meet representatives of all 72 Nationwide League football clubs in Nottingham today amid concern that the company cannot afford to honour its broadcasting deal, which runs until summer 2004.

It is worth £315m to the clubs over three years, but there has been speculation that ITV might have to withdraw from the deal.Such talk was played down by the Football League yesterday. “ITV Digital paid £41m up front last summer, and has already paid £89m for this season,” a spokesman said. “That’s £130m, and the next payment, of £89m, is not due until next August. Granada have issued a statement saying they will make sure the commitments are honoured. There are no plans to change the deal and no need to renegotiate.” The spokesman said Mr Prebble was attending the meeting simply to outline how he felt the first few months of the deal had gone.Mr Allen said: “Granada and Carlton [ITV Digital's other shareholder] have both indicated that their current intention is to provide funds to ITV Digital and ITV Sport to enable their businesses to meet their operational requirements as and when they fall due.”Carlton and Granada, the two biggest ITV players, have already sunk £800m into ITV Digital, which allows consumers to receive a digital signal through a normal television aerial.

Another £350m is needed before it can become profitable in 2004.Yesterday Granada gave its clearest indication that it needs a partner to cut the future investment required. Mr Allen said: “The investment in ITV Digital is unacceptably high, given the advertising downturn.”It is understood that ITV is talking to Sky, which has 5.5 million customers, compared with 1.2 million at ITV Digital. ITV has already had to swallow its pride and announcethat it will pay Sky to carry its main ITV channel and ITV2, its secondary channel, on Sky. However, ITV Digital is now looking to reduce its costs by getting Sky to take on the management of ITV Digital customers, under a contract certain to be lucrative for Mr Murdoch’s company. It is also in discussions with the BBC and other players, thought to include the cable companies and British Telecom, over a further deal that would stem losses at ITV Digital and reduce the amount of money needed to see the business to profitability.Yesterday Granada reported that advertising revenues fell by 12 per cent for the financial year to 30 September Its main operations lost £186m for the period. The company revealed that it had sacked 650 employees in the past year and will cut 430 more jobs over the next six months.Carlton, a smaller company, is said by analysts to be feeling the pinch even worse.
